Dick Roberts: One More Step Of The Journey

May 4th Friday-Poster copy

Abstraction and Spontaneity

The paintings in “One More Step of the Journey 2013” are about the act of painting. Although individually the paintings possess different intensities, opposing levels of complexity and abstraction, and perhaps a vague adherence to  a narrative, the core of the process of painting remains consistent. The paintings are merely a reflection of the process of painting them. Every process is unique, like no other, and often influenced by my mood that day, the weather, who I have been talking to, what I cooked the night before, what materials are available to me, etc.

Typically I begin with random strokes then respond with subsequent strokes, swipes, or plunges over and over until I have a chaotic situation on the canvas. At this point my job as a painter is to achieve a relative equilibrium, internally and externally, that guides me to the completion of the composition. The magic of painting can never be totally explained. I find great joy in discovering the emerging world of a new painting. Although harmony of the mind and the heart is important, the metabolic process of converting color, form and line into the forces that drive the painting is absolutely necessary. And when I can do no more, I walk away. I call the painting finished… until the next time.

International Art Residency

Le Petit Atelier du Monde 2012

From April 8-27 I will be working with Gerlinde Pistner from Nurnberg, Germany and Virginia Wright Frierson from Wilmingon, NC in my studio at Acme Art Studios. We will paint together in my studio. We will present an exhibition of our paintings in the Acme gallery April 27 (4th Friday) 6-10 PM.

This is the first of an annual international art residency I will host at Acme. Le Petit Atelier du Monde (The Little Studio of the World) will take place in the spring of each year, either April or May. 2012 will feature Germany and the USA.  Future studios will involve artists from Macedonia, Denmark, Slovenia, France, among others. We will paint for three weeks and host an exhibition of the work. The exhibition will segue with the Wilmington 4th Friday Gallery tours. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

The Le Petit Atelier du Monde 2012 exhibition will be Friday April 27 from 6-10 PM

Fourth Fridays

The Fourth Friday Gallery Nights art walk, a loosely organized self-guided tour through downtown Wilmington’s art galleries and art spaces, is halfway through its 2011 season.

The art walk, which takes place from 6-9 p.m. on the fourth Friday of each month, now has 27 stops, the most since it began in 2003. The grassroots event is also attracting more people than ever as it continues to strive for stability.
